Sunshine and Shifting Friendships: Helping Your Teen Girl Navigate Summer Social Changes

by | Jun 3, 2025 | Teenagers | 0 comments

The shift into summer may be a welcome relief for your teenage daughter.  She may be looking forward to lazy mornings and homework-free afternoons.  But while summer often appears carefree on the surface, it can be an emotionally complex time for a teen girl.  Without a regular school routine, friendships often change and sometimes give rise to self-doubt, social anxiety, and stress.

After over a decade of coaching teen girls, I’ve noticed four common social changes, that are specific to summer months:

  • Some friendships strengthen:

Summer can give girls more time and freedom to bond with friends. They may deepen friendships that feel authentic and easy.

  • Some friendships fade or change:

When the common thread of school is removed, some friendships lose momentum. This can feel confusing and even hurtful.

  • FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) intensifies:

Without regular social interactions at school, a teen girl grows more attached to her phone. Hours of scrolling through reels of beach days, group selfies, and vacations can leave her depleted or feeling left out. This can lead to a sense of  sadness and self-doubt.

  • New social connections emerge:

Camps and summer jobs introduce girls to new people. Your daughter may form unexpected connections and start  drifting from old ones. While these changes are natural and may be welcome, they can be confusing.

Social changes may make your daughter feel uncertain about her place in a group and unsure about how to navigate changing friendships.  When combined with a sense of exclusion, she may spiral into negative thinking and self-doubt-

  • What’s wrong with me?
  • Did I do something wrong?
  • Why didn’t they invite me?
  •  am not fun/interesting/cool enough.
  • It’s not even worth trying. No one wants to hang out with me.

Not only does this unhelpful thinking take up more mental space than it would during the school year, if left unchecked,  it can also have a negative effect on how your daughter sees herself and her attitude about the next school year.

How to Support Your Teen Girl

1. Normalize the Changes

Let her know it’s completely normal for friendships to change over the summer. Talk about the social changes she’s experienced in the past and help her see that change often reveals who and what really matters.

2. Talk About Healthy Friendships

Use this time to help her reflect on what she wants in a friend. Talk about qualities including kindness and respect; explore how each is reflected in her friendships.  Be curious about how your daughter views healthy and unhealthy friendships. These conversations support emotional intelligence and strengthen her ability to foster healthy friendships.

3. Encourage Self-Connection

The most important friendship she’ll ever have is the one with herself. Encourage her to explore her interests, spend time doing things that light her up, and build confidence. Journaling, creative projects, volunteering, or even solo outings can help her feel grounded and fulfilled—even without constant social interaction.

4. Limit the Comparison Game

If you notice she’s scrolling through social media and feeling down, talk about the reality behind the highlight reel. Remind her that everyone posts their best moments, but it doesn’t reflect the full picture. Help her focus on her own experience rather than comparing it to others

5. Consider Life Coaching

If your daughter is feeling lost, lonely, or stuck in self-doubt, summer can be a perfect time for coaching. Life coaching can help her build confidence and resilience, learn how to navigate social changes and challenges, and develop a growth mindset that supports her  in all parts of her life.  Unlike therapy, coaching is not about fixing your daughter—it’s about equipping her with lifelong tools that help her thrive.

Final Thoughts

Summer brings change, and change—especially in friendships—can be tough for a teen girl. But it also offers space to pause, reflect, and reset. With your support and the right guidance, your daughter can emerge from summer more confident in who she is, clearer about the friendships she values, and better prepared to face the school year with strength and self-assurance.
