Mindset Coaching

One of my favorite quotes is from Lao Tzu:

“Watch your thoughts, they become your words; watch your words, they become your actions; watch your actions, they become your habits; watch your habits, they become your character; watch your character, it becomes your destiny.”

As this quote suggests, our thoughts are powerful. They trigger our emotions, prompt our actions, influence our beliefs and values, and ultimately, create our mindset.  

Our mindset plays a critical role in how we approach and experience life.  When our thoughts are mostly negative or self-critical, our mindset will likely reflect the same qualities.  On the flip side, when our thoughts are optimistic and confident, our mindset will follow.  


Many teenage girls and young women have yet to understand how their thoughts influence their mindset or the powerful role their mindset plays on their moods, self-esteem, and achievement of their goals.  They often find themselves controlled by impulsive, critical thoughts: 


I’m not good enough.

Everyone is judging me. 

I’ll never have what ___ has. 

This/I will always be this way. 


These types of thoughts lead to a fixed mindset that keeps girls stuck or unhappy.  Researcher Carol Dwek defines a fixed mindset as a belief that your abilities are fixed and cannot be changed. A fixed mindset includes a belief that effort doesn’t matter, only talent and intelligence lead to success.  Just imagine how impactful this is for a teen girl as she’s preparing for a test, sport, or college! Or for a college student, who has countless possibilities in front of her but a limiting belief that she doesn’t have what it takes to seize those opportunities and be successful.  


This is where mindset coaching comes in. 


As a life coach for teen girls and young women, I understand the importance of teaching girls how to take charge of their thoughts and develop a growth mindset, or as Dwek describes, a belief that you can develop and strengthen talents and abilities through effort and persistence.

Girls with a growth mindset believe in themselves.  They are confident and resilient.  They take on challenges, learn from their mistakes, and are willing to take healthy risks that lead to opportunities and growth.   


This is why a cornerstone of my teen and young adult coaching programs is mindset coaching.  Using effective coaching methods, I help girls develop thought awareness so they can start to identify their helpful and harmful thoughts, and tap into empowering thoughts.  In a surprisingly short time, girls discover the power they have to create a growth mindset, and their critical thoughts turn into beliefs such as:: 


I am enough! 

I can develop the skills I need for success! 

Challenges are opportunities for growth. 

Failure is my most important teacher. 


William James said, “If you can change your mind, you can change your life.”  

Through mindset coaching, teen girls and young women begin to understand this truth and become less controlled by their critical thoughts and negative feelings.  Instead, they take control of their thoughts, tap into a growth mindset, and choose actions that lead to the feelings and experiences they desire.
