How to Respond When Your Teen Lies

by | Feb 19, 2025 | Teenagers | 0 comments

While teen lies are never acceptable, it’s important to understand what drives your teen to lie so you can support her in an effective and appropriate way.  One of the main reasons teens lie is out of fear.  They fear punishment, disappointment, judgment, or being misunderstood. Many teens lie to avoid feeling embarrassed or getting into uncomfortable conversations about topics like sex, relationships, or their plans for the future.  (See this blog on what drives teens to lie.)

When you catch your teen in a lie, you may be tempted to “teach her a lesson” by taking away a privilege. But if you really want to instill the value of honesty, you need to take a different approach.

It Starts With Your Trusting Relationship

Your teen will be more inclined to express herself honestly when she feels validated and understood.  When your responses are consistently calm and non-judgmental, she will not fear turning to you with the truth.  Rather, she will trust that you will handle her truth with empathy and understanding.

You can cultivate a trusting relationship by listening to understand your teen.  This means listening without jumping to conclusions, making assumptions, or telling her what to do.   This type of listening is curious, as you ask yourself the question: what is it like to be her? Listening this way supports a deeper and more honest dialogue.

As you cultivate a safe environment and trusting relationship, you can have meaningful conversations about the impact of lying.  She is likely to have an experience of being lied to so you may ask her to reflect on that time. Explore how the lie made her feel, and how it changed her view of the other person and her relationship with that person.  Conversations like these will help your teen understand the long-term consequences of dishonesty.

It’s also important to talk with your teen about forgiveness and repair.  Investigate how she understands forgiveness and the role it plays in relationships.  Share ideas for how to repair a relationship in which there’s been dishonesty or betrayal.

Through these conversations,  you have an opportunity to model honesty.  Admit that it is not always easy to tell the truth or take responsibility for a mistake, but it always leads to greater understanding.  This will help her feel less alone and provides her with a framework for how she can handle the ups and downs of life and lean into hard, honest conversations.

A Mindful Response to Teen Lies

Remember, most teen lies stem out of fear.  Before you react to your teen’s lie, reflect.

What was she afraid of?

What or whom was she trying to protect?

What was she attempting to avoid?

The answers to these questions will help inform your response to her dishonesty.  When you approach your teen, build upon the trusting relationship you’ve cultivated.  Try not to be reactive, but rather validate that it was difficult to tell the truth. Explore what she now knows and how she can handle things differently moving forward.  Explain that in telling a lie, trust has broken and will take time to repair.   Be specific about the steps she can take to rebuild trust.  You may open a conversation about what she thinks can be done to strengthen trust.  While it’s natural to express your disappointment, it’s critical to offer reassurance, encouragement, and hope.

Responding to your teen’s dishonesty is about fostering a relationship built on trust, openness, and understanding.  As you do, your teen learns how to navigate the complexities of growing up, and knows she can count on you for support and guidance.
