With summer winding down, your daughter may be shifting into back-to-school mode – stocking up on school supplies and new outfits. But true back-to-school prep goes beyond shopping.
For many girls, going back to school comes with a mix of emotions: excitement, uncertainty, and sometimes stress. The best way to support your daughter isn’t just wit a back-to-school shopping spree, —it’s by helping her build confidence in three key areas: emotional, social, and academic.
Emotional Confidence
A simple open-ended question like, “How are you feeling about the upcoming year?” can open a meaningful dialogue. Whether your daughter is excited, nervous, or dreading the first day, validate and normalize her feelings. You might respond with: : “I get it”. “That makes sense.” or “It’s normal to feel that way.” You can take it a step further by exploring what support she needs or what would help her feel more confident and prepared. As she responds, look for what is doable and encourage her to take action. This will help build emotional intelligence and resilience.

Social Confidence
Since summer often brings a break from school friends and social routines, your daughter may need a nudge to ease back into her social life. Encourage low-pressure meetups or casual texts to reconnect. It’s also helpful to tap into her hopes for the upcoming school year. Ask her what social experiences she’s looking forward to, what friends she’s most excited to see, or who she may want to get closer to this year. If she’s had negative social experiences in the past, now is the time to reflect and reset.
Academic Confidence
Confidence in the classroom starts with feeling well-rested and organized so, before school starts, slowly re-establish a daily rhythm. These late summer routines should include healthy sleep and limited screen-time. Talk about the routines and systems that worked for her in previous school years and what she wants to continue or refine this year. Help her develop strategies for time-management and organization. One of my favorites is LP3, which is described in my book Power Up Your Parenting.)
The last few weeks of summer are the perfect time to strengthen the internal skills that will support your daughter all year long. Life coaching can help your daughter build the self-awareness, social tools, and mindset she needs to feel confident and prepared in middle school, high school, or college.
