Back to High School Tips for Teens

by | Aug 18, 2023 | Parenting, Teenagers | 0 comments

High school can be intimidating! Whether your daughter is returning or starting her freshman year, adjusting to new people and routines can trigger stress and fear. She might not be aware that there is a world of opportunities ahead of her that goes far beyond academics;  high school is also about personal development and building long-lasting friendships.

These are a few of my favorite back-to-school tips for teenage girls. Share this list with your teen or look for ways to integrate these suggestions into your conversations with her.

  1. Master Time Management

The school year brings an increased workload, extracurricular activities, and social commitments. To manage your time effectively, create a study schedule, prioritize, and allocate time for relaxation and fun. Balancing academics and personal life will reduce stress and allow you to make the most of your high school experience.

2. Become an Expert in Organization

Organization is the key to staying on top of your assignments and responsibilities. Invest in a planner or use digital tools to track due dates, tests, and activities. Keep your study area clutter-free to enhance focus and productivity. By staying organized, you will ensure that no important task falls through the cracks.

3. Sharpen Your Study Habits

High school academics can be demanding. To get on top of the academic workload, cultivate effective study habits. Find a study method that works for you, whether it’s summarizing notes, creating flashcards, or teaching the material to someone else. Regularly review class material, seek help when needed, and participate in study groups to reinforce your understanding of various subjects.

4. Build Supportive Relationships

High school is an excellent opportunity to forge new friendships and strengthen existing ones. Surround yourself with people who uplift and support you. Seek out clubs, teams, or organizations that align with your interests to meet like-minded individuals. Healthy relationships contribute to a positive high school experience.

5. Embrace Extracurricular Activities

The high school offers a diverse range of extracurricular activities, such as sports, arts, music, and clubs. Explore your passions and interests by participating in these activities. Not only will this make high school more enjoyable, but it will also help you develop essential life skills, such as teamwork, leadership, and time management.  If you’re college-bound, participation in extracurricular activities will also enhance your college applications.

6. Cultivate Open Communication with Family

Maintaining open communication with your family is crucial during the high school years. They can offer valuable advice, support, and a safe space to discuss your challenges and achievements. Share your experiences with them, and seek their guidance whenever needed.

7. Prepare for Peer Pressure

High school can sometimes involve pressure to engage in risky behaviors or make questionable choices. Tune into your values and what you really want your high school experience to include.  Educate yourself on the potential consequences of certain actions, and stand firm in your boundaries and beliefs. Surround yourself with friends who share your positive values and make decisions that align with your long-term well-being.

8. Build a Support System

Peers and parents can be wonderful support and offer encouragement and advice, but sometimes it can be hard to open up to friends or family members about certain things.  Clarify who else is in your support system.  It may be a therapist, teacher, or extended family member.  A life coach can also provide a safe place where you can process and learn from your experiences and get clarity about your best next steps.

Conclusion

Incorporate these valuable back-to-school tips for teenage girls to ease the transition and make the most of their high school journey. From mastering time management to cultivating supportive relationships, these strategies go beyond academics and ensure a well-rounded and fulfilling experience.
