Talking with Your Teen Daughter about Respect, Boundaries, and Consent

by | Apr 10, 2025 | Teenagers | 0 comments

Conversations about sex and dating extend beyond the basics. (Read Part 1 to learn how to get a conversation started) To feel confident and safe and to form healthy relationships, your daughter needs an understanding of respect, boundaries, and consent.

Boundaries & Respect

Boundaries define what is and is not OK with your daughter.  They stem from self-respect, honoring what she wants and needs. One way to start the conversation about boundaries and respect is to ask her:

    • What feels okay and what doesn’t in a relationship?
    • How do you want to be treated by a romantic partner?
    • What does respect look like in a romantic relationship? What does it feel like?

Her answers will reveal her personal boundaries and thoughts on respect.  Highlight what you notice, as well as the link between boundaries and self-respect.

Helping your daughter develop a deeper understanding of boundaries and respect is the first step. The second step is teaching her how to express her boundaries.  This is usually one of the hardest parts for girls. Many fear upsetting their ‘person’ or losing the relationship.  Some worry about being judged or seen as selfish.  Most simply don’t know how.

When you talk with your daughter about expressing her boundaries, remind her that doing so is not confrontational or mean. It’s actually helpful as it gives the other person a guide for how she wants to be treated.  Stating a boundary is simple and direct, as is the case with saying NO.  Teach her that “no” is a complete sentence!

In addition, encourage her to:

  • Be direct. Share the following examples:
    • I’m not ready to —— . Let’s play a video game; get food; take a walk instead.
    • I care about you but I don’t want to ——.
    • This is not ok with me.
    • I will tell you when I’m ready.
  • Set expectations early
  • Walk away if needed

Assure her that a person who truly respects her will honor her boundaries without pushback.

Consent

Consent is about your daughter’s rights and choices in romantic relationships and involves mutual agreement without pressure, coercion, guilt, or fear.

The first step to talking about consent is understanding how your daughter thinks about it. This will help you fill in the gaps and build upon what she already knows.  To get the conversation going, ask her a simple question:  What does consent mean to you?  Or a prompt:  Tell me your thoughts about consent.

Depending on her response, you may need to provide further information:

  • Consent is freely given – She should not feel pressured, manipulated, or coerced into saying “yes.”
  • Consent is ongoing – She gives consent at every step. It is not a one-time thing.
  • Consent is reversible – She can change her mind at any time, no matter what.
  • Consent requires clarity– An explicit “yes” can only be given to a clear request. She should fully understand what she is being asked to do.

When talking about consent, it can be helpful to talk about how it shows up in other aspects of life. For example, your daughter seeks consent from friends when she asks before borrowing something. If she has a job, she gets consent from her boss before taking time off.  In many situations, she’ll ask your permission and await your consent before engaging in certain activities.

Final Words About Respect, Boundaries and Consent

Talking to your daughter about respect, boundaries, and consent does not condone or promote sex. Rather, it helps her understand how to respect herself and navigate relationships with confidence.  Like many aspects of “the talk,” it isn’t a one-time conversation—it’s an ongoing dialogue. As she has more experiences, she will develop more awareness, and her boundaries and values will evolve. Remain curious, supportive, and open so she feels supported every step of the way.
