How to Help Your Teenage Daughter Become a Leader

by | Aug 5, 2024 | Parenting, Teenagers | 0 comments

Leadership does not come naturally to all girls.  Many worry that taking the lead might be seen as bossy or controlling. They find it easier to be a follower, a role where they are less likely to be judged or ridiculed.

While it can be scary for girls to step into leadership roles, they can develop leadership skills and qualities that will serve them whether in a leadership spotlight or leading by example.

Leadership skills refer to a set of competencies and abilities. They include:

  • Self-awareness
  • Effective communication
  • Problem-solving

Leadership qualities refer to personality characteristics. They include:

  • Self-confidence
  • Emotional intelligence
  • Open-mindedness

Both leadership skills and qualities develop through experiences but they can also be cultivated through life coaching and intentional parenting.

To help your teenage daughter become a leader and encourage her to develop her leadership skills and qualities, start an introspective conversation on the topic. Use these questions to get the discussion started.

  • Share this quote: You are the choices that you make.  Ask: How is this true for you?

  • What makes a constructive conversation?
  • How do your habits impact your life at school? With friends? In sports?
  • How do your perceptions shape your choices?
  • What do you value? How do your values inform your choices?

  • What are the differences between a response and a reaction?

Being a leader means being able to make individual choices with confidence and assurance. It’s about setting a personal standard for behavior, and consequently, inspiring and positively influencing others. No matter what type of leader your teenage daughter is or aspires to become, these questions will help your teenage daughter become a leader by providing valuable insights and encouraging her growth.
