Know your worth
Your teen’s self-esteem is fragile. It can easily be damaged by a mean girl, an academic setback, or an experience of rejection. Following these experiences, your daughter is likely to criticize or compare herself. She may start to question her self-worth and her abilities. However, with strong self-esteem, your teen daughter will have the confidence and courage to stand up for herself, bounce back from disappointment, and learn from social challenges. Self-esteem helps her maintain an overall positive attitude, even when life gets hard.
Teen life coaching helps girls develop self-esteem. Through life coaching, girls discover their strengths, connect with their values, and learn how handle challenges and setbacks with resilience and grace. When I’m coaching girls in the area of self-esteem, one thing I share are affirmations. When practiced regularly, affirmations promote constructive thinking and a healthy self-esteem.
1. I am learning from my mistakes.
In life coaching sessions, girls have a valuable opportunity to process their mistakes and extract meaningful wisdom. They learn to see mistakes as valuable teachers, revealing what can be done differently or illuminating a new, better path forward.
2. I am capable of positive change.
My teen coaching clients learn a lot about choice and that every day, even every moment, provides an opportunity to make a different choice. Soon, they realize they have the power to create the life they want. They get clear on their desired outcome and determine what actions will move them in that direction. With a life coach, they have support every step of the way.
3. There is no such thing as failure, only growth.
Similar to mistakes, failure is a valuable teacher. Many of the girls I coach fear failure and will avoid taking healthy risks out of fear they won’t succeed. Through teen life coaching, they learn that failure is a critical part of learning and growing into the best versions of themselves.
4. Life is happening for me.
One of my favorite notions to explore with my teen coaching clients is: everything that happens, happens to teach you what you need to learn or point you in a direction you are meant to go. Girls who work with me sharpen their focus on how life is working for their greatest good. This transforms their outlook and boosts their optimism.
5. All people who come into my life can teach me something.
When girls come to their coaching sessions frustrated with an annoying teacher or questionable friend, I ask them, what might this person be teaching you? Sometimes they discover that behind even the most frustrating person is a lesson in compassion, understanding, or loyalty.
6. Comparison steals my happiness, so I celebrate differences.
Teenage girls often get lost in a tunnel of comparison, which breeds self-doubt and feelings of not-good-enough. In teen life coaching, girls discover how to change comparison into admiration and celebrate differences. Rather than putting themselves down, they discover no one is better, we are all different and we can learn from each other’s differences.
7. There are many roads to success.
Many of my high school teen coaching clients, are stressed and overwhelmed by the pressure they feel to earn a high GPA, get into a top college, and have a clear long-term plan for their future. In their coaching sessions, we talk about how success means different things to different people. Their success will look different from their friend’s success, and how they each achieve their goals will also be different. As my clients learn there is not just one right way, there are many right ways, they are flooded with relief.
8. My body supports me.
Girls with a low self-esteem tend to be very critical of their body. In fact, body image is one of the most common coaching topics. I help girls replace harsh judgements of their body and learn to honor it for the life that it gives them and the activities it allows them to do. They learn how treat their body and themselves the same way they would treat a best friend, with kindness, caring, and love.
9. Trust the process.
When girls spend countless hours trying to figure everything out or control other people, their self-esteem takes a hit. When they learn to relax, allow, and trust the process of life, they begin to let go of the need for answers and control. I love to talk with girls about how life is unfolding exactly the way it is meant to. As they tap into trust, worry fades and they become more excited for their future.
10. Nothing is permanent.
My teen clients know they have a safe space in their coaching sessions, so they will frequently vent about their challenges, fears, and doubts. When they do, I see it as an opportunity to share an important truth: Nothing is permanent. Every day is different, every moment is new. When you are in a time of stress or struggle, remember that it won’t last. When in a moment of joy and bliss, savor it! Be grateful.
Just like my teen clients have learned how to apply these self-esteem affirmations to their everyday life, your teen can too! Through life coaching she will develop lasting self-esteem, which is the foundation to confidence, resilience, happiness and so much more!
