5 Reasons Why Your Teenage Daughter Needs Resilience

Times have changed!

Teens are growing up in a high-speed, information-rich, confusing, digital world, one that is full of distorted values and fierce competition. They live in a culture of busyness, with full schedules and devices that leave them constantly connected.

The results?

Teens are distracted, anxious, confused, and easily derailed. Rather than trusting their ability to cope with life’s challenges, they find themselves questioning their competence and being easily misled. Most teens need to develop the resilience necessary to see them through hard situations.

Resilient teens gain a strong sense of who they are and what they value. They develop coping skills and understand that challenges are important teachers.

Why Your Teenage Daughter Needs More Resilience

  1. Resilience enables her to face changes and challenges with thoughtfulness. Rather than avoiding, catastrophizing, or giving up, she will consider her choices and actions that will lead to the best outcome.
  2. Resilience combats anxiety. When your daughter has resilience, she will trust in her ability to handle challenges, know hard times are temporary and believe that through hardship comes growth.  This will make her less anxious or fearful.
  3. Resilience promotes self-advocacy. Resilient teens know they don’t have to go through life alone. As your daughter becomes more resilient, she will be more likely to speak up and ask for help.  She will become more resourceful and assertive.
  4. Difficult emotions are a normal part of life. Without resilience, your daughter may easily get derailed by heavy feelings. She may blame others or feel totally helpless.  But resilient teens have an ability to self-soothe. She can effectively process and reframe negative thoughts and heavy feelings so she can face challenges with clarity and calm.
  5. Resilience is linked to responsibility.  A resilient teen makes connections between actions and consequences. She will be less likely to be rebellious or get involved in risky behavior.
