Your daughter’s mindset influences everything. From her feelings and behavior to her level of success and achievement. Ultimately, her mindset shapes her reality. That is one reason why positive mindset coaching is an integral part of my teen and young adult life coaching programs.
Although your daughter’s mindset starts developing in childhood, it is constantly being shaped by her experiences and the feedback she receives from others. Unfortunately, as they journey through adolescence, many teen girls get stuck in a negative mindset. Their thoughts are ruled by self-doubt, fear, or assumptions. However, through mindset coaching, girls learn how to recognize unhelpful thoughts, untangle themselves from a negative mindset, and start cultivating a positive, helpful mindset.
While there are several ways to change a mindset, the following practices are my favorites. During a mindset-coaching session, girls learn these practices and the benefits. They are simple and effective ways to begin a “mind shift.” Share them with your daughter and give them a try together.
1.Write five things you are grateful for. Gratitude sparks positive feelings and encourages a focus on what brings happiness!
2. Tell yourself something kind and encouraging. A personal affirmation promotes a positive mood and self-confidence.
3. Write down three good things that happened today. Similar to gratitude, acknowledging good things is an intentional way to shift focus from fear, doubt, and negativity to positive, joyful experiences.
4. Make a point to share three positive comments on social media. Spreading positivity induces positive feelings.
5. Audit your social media. Social media takes up so much time so it’s critical to make sure what you are feeding yourself on social media is uplifting. Unfollow people who don’t spark joy.
6. Start your day with an intention. Think of an attitude or mindset you want to embrace and state it in the form of an intention. “Today will be a…. “ or “I feel…” An intention prepares your body and mind to experience what you desire.

7. Help someone who least expects your help. Studies show that helping others has tremendous benefits on mental health, including reducing stress, increasing happiness, and promoting a positive attitude.
8. Think about what it means to be self-compassionate. Consider how you can be your own best friend today and everyday.
9. Try to replace phrases like “I can’t,” “I won’t” and “I shouldn’t” with “I’m learning…,” “I’ll try…,” and “I’d prefer…” These phrases encourage a growth mindset*, which is a belief in your ability to learn new skills, develop strengths, and create positive changes.
10. Find a quote that means something to you. Write it down and post it somewhere you can see it. Visual cues prompt positive thoughts and feelings.
Experts say it takes 21 days to create a habit, but these positive mindset practices can have an instant positive impact on mood, energy, and perspective. With consistent practice, your daughter’s mindset will strengthen and so will her self-esteem, motivation, and resilience.
